The Atlanta Radio Club will be having a unique and fun two-for-one event on Saturday, September 11, at Blackburn Park, 3493 Ashford Dunwoody Road, Brookhaven, GA 30319.
That day is the first day of the ARRL September ARRL VHF contest. (See a description here) The club will set up a variety of radios and antennas to operate on:
Bands:
In addition, we’ll have a little “antenna party.” We’ll supply materials to build a bunch of “roll-up two-meter j-poles,” a simple roll-up antenna that you can stick in your pocket and attach to your HT or other 2-meter radio. It’s got a couple of dB gain over a dipole, and about a gazillion dB gain over the rubber ducky antennas normally used on an HT. The antenna will be yours to keep after you build it. We’ll also have one kit for a two-meter, four-element Yagi antenna if anyone wants to assemble it and give it a go.
We’ll gather at Blackburn around noon on Saturday to get everything set up, with the contest starting 2 PM. And we’ll probably operate until around 8 or 9 PM. We’ll be in a covered pavilion, and we’ll have food and drinks available. In addition, Blackburn Park is a great park with walking and biking trails, a super playground, and other activities, so feel free to bring the spouse and kids. We’ll have a talk-in station on 146.55 MHz which will not only serve as the link for people going to and from the event, all of those communications will count as contacts during the contest.
Come on by. It'll be a fun day.
