WELCOME TO THE ATLANTA RADIO CLUB

Special Note
As a result of the Town Hall in January, club leadership put together a tentative plan of events for the rest of 2024. The list is at the bottom of the page in the "2024 Summary" section. We don't have a lot of details on the events yet but we will know more over the coming months.
In response to requests for more technically oriented activities, leadership restarted the Second Sunday Tech Sessions (STSS) at PDK Airport.  These sessions will alternate monthly with the Second Sunday operating event in a local park.
Those of you who have been around a while know that a few years ago John Talipski, N3ACK (ARC VP) started organizing an outing in a park for the second Sunday of each month; those outings have been very well received inside and outside the club.  We do not want to stop them -- in fact SSTS did at least two park outings each year from the beginning in 2009.
Both activities were and are popular so we will have them both on alternate months.

The Second Sunday Tech Sessions will be hands-on sessions where we will get to take things apart, build things, configure things e.g. DMR Codeplugs and more. The first SSTS will be in May, at which we'll be building VHF antennas under the expert tutelage of Bob Bennett, NZ2Z.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Monthly Meeting -  Fox Hunting - Joe Domaleski, KI4ASK
Date: Thursday, February 1st 2024
Time: 7:30 PM ET (2330Z)
Location: Zoom

-or-
Meeting ID: 426 375 5765

Passcode: 791957
Speaker Location: Zoom
Presentation:
From the ARRL:
Every weekend, in cities and towns all across the country, ham radio operators gather on hilltops for a very special kind of contest--the Fox Hunt. A small, low power transmitter is hidden and the rest of the crew tries to find it. Sound simple? It can be very challenging and a whole lot of fun.
-----------------------------
Joe Domaleski, KI4ASK, will tell us about his experiences with Fox Hunting and how much fun it is for him and other hams he knows. He'll talk about different ways Fox Hunts are held. Some hunts are done on foot in fields and forests, some are done by hams in their cars driving around the city, and some are conducted (more) exotically.
To be a successful hunter you have to know how to use your radio for direction finding, which is an art and science all by itself.

Speaker Bio:

Joe Domaleski, KI4ASK, is a lifelong radio aficionado. He holds an Amateur Extra class license as KI4ASK and a GMRS license WRCL967. You've probably met Joe speaking at a hamfest or maybe heard him as "Runner 1" during some of the Atlanta area running events, like the Peachtree Road Race. He's a past-President of the Fayette County Amateur Radio club and most recently served as the Assistant Section Manager for the Georgia Section of the ARRL. He currently serves as the PIO for Georgia AuxComm. He and his wife Mary Catherine (KI4HHI) enjoy mobile operations including QRP, POTA, SOTA, and fox hunting! Joe has a BS in Math/Computer Science from UNG and an MBA from GSU. He and his wife own a digital marketing agency "Country Fried Creative" based in Peachtree City. Joe and Mary Catherine have been married for 30 years and have three grown children. They were honored to be featured on the cover of the February 2020 issue of CQ Amateur Radio magazine for their interest in fox hunting.

Presentation: It's a new year so we want to find out what our members and other interested parties would like to see the ARC do in 2024.
  • Are there certain subjects you want presentations on?
  • Do you want to have technical hands-on sessions? On what subjects?
  • What about our outdoor operating events? Are they of use to you? Do they need to be changed?
  • How about tours of amateur radio related sites around Atlanta or beyond?
The ARC exists for the benefit of our members. What can we do that would be a benefit to you?
We encourage you to speak up during the zoom or use the chat to comment.
But if you don't make the live zoom, you can watch it later on YouTube and email your comments and suggestions to Bill Perkins, KB4KFT, the ARC President.
Or you can use this form to email Bill. Fields marked with an asterisk are mandatory.

WORKED ALL GEORGIA AWARD

The Atlanta Radio Club, with the support of the Georgia Section of the ARRL, is proud to support the "Worked All Georgia" Award. The WAG Award is open to radio amateurs who can provide proof of two-way radio amateur radio contact with all 159 counties in the state of Georgia. This award is nice complement to the annual Georgia QSO Party, which in fact would be a good time to work on some of those hard-to-get counties. The award is embodied in a nice certificate.
More information can be found here.

CLUB HISTORY

The Atlanta Radio Club (ARC) was founded in March 1911. It is believed to be the longest continually operating non-university club in Georgia (Georgia Tech was founded earlier). With over 100 members, ARC activities include meetings, operating events, training sessions, membership outings, and community service activities in Metro-Atlanta.

The ARC helps operate the Atlanta Hamfestival and owns, operates or supports 11 repeaters around the metro area.  In an average month, the club will hold a regular membership meeting, a tech/training session or operating outing, publish the Atlanta Ham newsletter, have 8 lunch outings and host over 20 nets via club repeaters.

SISTER Club - Geelong Amateur Radio Club - VK3ATL

Did you know the Atlanta Radio Club has a sister club?

In 2010, Dallas Jones (VK3DJ) from Drysdale, Victoria in Australia visited the United States to meet some friends he met on the air. "During his travels, he visited the Atlanta Radio Club and from all accounts had a great time with the guys."

BADGES
