Second Sunday in the Park
(August 13 @ 2 PM ET)
(Written by Bill Perkins, KB4KFT, ARC President)
We are planning another park outing for Sunday, August 13th, at Brook Run Park Dunwoody, 2pm. No special reason other than getting out and playing radio for a bit.
We will be in the pavilion on the hill above the Tree Top Quest Venue and parking. Contact John N3ACK 470-272-8940 if having problem finding us. If using what3words app select sandwhich.clan.deserved or GPS 33.9346940, -84.3015688
But there are a few things on the agenda for this outing.
One, those folks who built antennas in July at this park can bring them and we will get them on the air. We did put analyzers on them on build-day but did not get them all on the air. While low SWR is good, nothing is better than talking to someone on the antenna. Here is your chance. Plus we can do some nice-to-have final touches to them too.
Two, Len, KF4JBF, will have his "newly engineered" 6 meter moxon antenna out again. We got it up Field Day, it was working, but needed some physical changes, he has made those changes and is wanting to try it again. 6 meters is often hit or miss but with solar flares and what not 6 meters may be popping - you can never tell.
Three, I got a JPC-12 antenna for my birthday (not a surprise as I bought it myself) and have set it up twice at home to experiment with. Anyone curious about this antenna (system) will be able to go hands on with it, it'll be hooked to a radio so we
can figure out how well it works. I am curious how well it works too. Currently I can get it good on 15m, 20m, and 40m (the big three) and would like to see if 10m and 6m are do-able. But making contacts on one or more of the big three is the main goal.
Four, anything else (reasonable) anyone wants to try is OK too.
The goal is to have fun playing radio.

August Meeting - 2023 ARC Election and Mickey Baker, N4MB (ARRL SE Director)
Date: Thursday, August 3rd
Time: 7:30 PM ET (2330Z)
Location: Zoom

-or-
Meeting ID: 426 375 5765

Passcode: 791957
Speaker Location: Zoom
There are two events coming up in August.
2023 ARC Election. The positions up for election are:
  • ARC President
  • ARC Vice President
  • ARC Secretary
  • ARC Treasurer
  • ARC Member-at-Large
Optionally, the position of Secretary and Treasurer can be combined and a second Member-At-Large position added to keep the count of Board members odd. Declared slates will be announced and additional nominations will be taken from the floor. There'll be Q&A of the slates if need be followed by a vote for one winning slate.
Presentation: The Atlanta Radio Club is happy to announce that our speaker for the August 3 meeting will be Mickey Baker, N4MB. Mickey is Division Director of the ARRL Southeastern Division, which includes the Georgia section. As a division director he’s one of the 15 members of the ARRL Board of Directors.
Mickey will be talking about the recently announced ARRL dues increase and membership benefit changes. One of these changes is that members will no longer receive a free printed copy of  QST, QEX or NCJ. Needless to say the changes are controversial and have the ham radio social media buzzing. Mickey’s talk is very timely.
We want to find out as much as we can from him so feel free to ask questions. Don’t be shy!

WORKED ALL GEORGIA AWARD

The Atlanta Radio Club, with the support of the Georgia Section of the ARRL, is proud to support the "Worked All Georgia" Award. The WAG Award is open to radio amateurs who can provide proof of two-way radio amateur radio contact with all 159 counties in the state of Georgia. This award is nice complement to the annual Georgia QSO Party, which in fact would be a good time to work on some of those hard-to-get counties. The award is embodied in a nice certificate.
More information can be found here.

CLUB HISTORY

The Atlanta Radio Club (ARC) was founded in March 1911. It is believed to be the longest continually operating club in Georgia (Georgia Tech was founded earlier). With over 100 members, ARC activities include meetings, operating events, training sessions, membership outings, and community service activities in Metro-Atlanta.

The ARC helps operate the Atlanta Hamfestival and owns, operates or supports 11 repeaters around the metro area.  In an average month, the club will hold a regular membership meeting, a tech/training session or operating outing, publish the Atlanta Ham newsletter, have 8 lunch outings and host over 20 nets via club repeaters.

SISTER Club - Geelong Amateur Radio Club - VK3ATL

Did you know the Atlanta Radio Club has a sister club?

In 2010, Dallas Jones (VK3DJ) from Drysdale, Victoria in Australia visited the United States to meet some friends he met on the air. "During his travels, he visited the Atlanta Radio Club and from all accounts had a great time with the guys."

BADGES

The official badge supplier of the ARC is The Signman of Baton Rouge.
