October Meeting -  Michael Burnette, AF7KB - The Fast Track to Understanding Ham Radio Antennas
Date: Thursday, October 6th
Time: 7:30 PM

Location(s): Zoom
Speaker Location: Zoom

The Atlanta Radio Club is pleased to announce that the speaker at our October meeting will be Michael Burnette, AF7KB. The title of his talk is "The Fast Track to Understanding Ham Radio Antennas”.
This is an expanded version of the presentation Michael recently made at the QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo.
Here’s a synopsis provided by Eric.

Speaker: Michael Burnette, AF7KB - The Fast Track to Understanding Ham Radio Antennas
Michael Burnette, AF7KB, is the award-winning author of the bestselling Fast Track to Your Ham License series. He spent decades as a commercial broadcaster, and more decades leading seminars all over the world. His approach to ham education is to offer comprehensive training in the theory and technology of ham radio. His energetic, fast-paced, content-rich presentations are a consistent hit at hamfests across the country.

Michael produces a series of educational videos called AF7KB Fast Track Ham Radio on Youtube. There are currently 19 videos in the series but he is working on others. They can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0TUltCJoV2ufJ4dSUY19jw/about

He is also the author of several Fast Track Ham Radio books. He’s currently writing a new book based on this antenna presentation. HRO was going to sell them but backed out at the last minute. Here’s a link to the books on, dare I say, Amazon:

Program:
  • Election of ARC 2022-2023 Officers and Board of Directors
The Election committee read the names of the candidates in the only slate submitted. They then asked for nominations from the floor...twice. There were no additional slates so the chairman of the Election Committee made a motion to approve the slate without objection. There were no objections so the slate was elected:
    • John Talipsky  - N3ACK - President
    • Bill Perkins -  KB4KFT – Vice President
    • Ade Shamblin - KJ4CUY – Secretary / Treasurer
    • Rob Osattin - KI4UTY – Member at Large
    • Ed Bevill - KO4SRJ – Member at Large
  • The members of the Election Committee were:
    • Jim Reed - N4BFR - Chairman
    • Newton White - N4EWT
    • Lane Watts - KB4KHQ
  • Speaker: Alan Wolke, W2AEW - Smith Charts and NanoVNA
Alan made a great presentation. We learned that Smith Charts can be used to determine the capacitance or inductance that needs to be added to a transmission line to match impedance with the load or source. If you graph the complex impedance measured by an analyzer on the Smith Chart you'll see how far off you are from 0 reactance and what you'll need to achieve it. The chart will also show you the effect of lengthening  the transmission line by multiples of 1/2 wavelength.  And, it will show you VSW R. And a lot more.
  • He also showed us how a NanoVNA can be used to graph these parameters vs frequency in order to find the resonant point(s).
    We learned A LOT.

WORKED ALL GEORGIA AWARD

The Atlanta Radio Club, with the support of the Georgia Section of the ARRL, is proud to support the "Worked All Georgia" Award. The WAG Award is open to radio amateurs who can provide proof of two-way radio amateur radio contact with all 159 counties in the state of Georgia. This award is nice complement to the annual Georgia QSO Party, which in fact would be a good time to work on some of those hard-to-get counties. The award is embodied in a nice certificate.
More information can be found here.

CLUB HISTORY

The Atlanta Radio Club (ARC) was founded in March 1911. It is believed to be the longest continually operating club in Georgia (Georgia Tech was founded earlier). With over 100 members, ARC activities include meetings, operating events, training sessions, membership outings, and community service activities in Metro-Atlanta.

The ARC helps operate the Atlanta Hamfestival and owns, operates or supports 11 repeaters around the metro area.  In an average month, the club will hold a regular membership meeting, a tech/training session or operating outing, publish the Atlanta Ham newsletter, have 8 lunch outings and host over 20 nets via club repeaters.

SISTER Club - Geelong Amateur Radio Club - VK3ATL

Did you know the Atlanta Radio Club has a sister club?

In 2010, Dallas Jones (VK3DJ) from Drysdale, Victoria in Australia visited the United States to meet some friends he met on the air. "During his travels, he visited the Atlanta Radio Club and from all accounts had a great time with the guys."
