September Meeting -  Club Election and presentation
Date: Thursday, September 1st
Time: 7:30 PM
Location(s): Zoom

Program:
  • Election of ARC 2022-2023 Officers and Board of Directors

    ** Rescheduled from August**
  • Speaker: Alan Wolke, W2AEW - Smith Charts and NanoVNA
The presentation will start by taking the mystery out of the basics of the venerable Smith Chart.  We'll then take a look at how the effects of transmission lines are easily shown on the Smith Chart. We'll discuss topics such as resonance and VSWR and line length.  A demonstration will briefly show how to setup the NanoVNA to measure your antenna system and "watch" the effects of your antenna tuner.  Finally, a short tutorial on how antenna matching networks can be designed using graphical methods with the Smith chart.
    Speaker BIO:
Alan is an RF applications engineer by profession, and a dedicated ham radio educator and Elmer via his YouTube channel and his many ARRL and club activities.
He earned his Electrical Engineering degree in 1985 from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. His early career focused mainly on analog/high-speed design, test and applications engineering in various fields ranging from fiber optic communications to hard disk drives.
Since 2006, he has been a Field Applications Engineer for Tektronix, focusing mainly on RF Applications. These include radar/electronic warfare, RF communications, RF device characterization, spectrum monitoring, surveillance and much more. He has worked with the military, government agencies, prime contractors, and commercial customers throughout the northeastern part of the country.
Alan was originally licensed in 1980 while in high school as KA2IZZ, and currently holds an Extra class license. He is a life member of the ARRL, and is the Technical Coordinator for the Northern New Jersey Section of the ARRL Field organization.
His favorite ham radio activities are operating CW and SSB on the HF bands, with occasional QRP and portable operations - just recently dabbling in POTA activations.  Outside of ham radio, Alan enjoys tinkering at the electronics workbench and producing videos for his popular YouTube channel, which has about 360 videos, over 176,000 subscribers, and more than 22 million views.

August Meeting -  Club Election and Eric Webner, K4FAN - Antennas 101
Date: Thursday, August 4th
Time: 7:30 PM
Location:  ZOOM Videoconference
Speaker Location: ZOOM Videoconference
Video: https://youtu.be/tpIgK98KyCY
Slides: n/a
Program:
  • Election of ARC 2022-2023 Officers and Board of Directors
** The election was pushed back to September because there wasn't time for the election committee to be formed and vet the slate, as called for in the bylaws**
  • Speaker:  Eric Wegner, K4FAN - Antennas 101

Antennas 101 is an overview of antennas commonly used in amateur practice across frequency bands from 160 meters to UHF. While this is a good refresher for experienced hams, Antennas 101 was designed for newer hams. Perhaps you just got your first license and are now wondering, "what now?" Maybe you just got a new whiz-bang radio and need to know how to get it to radiate so you can make contacts. Maybe you want to try a new mode or frequency band.

This talk promises to be informative for hams with all license levels and degrees of experience.

We plan to spend about 1/3 of the presentation doing Q&A. Please ask as many questions as you can. Don’t be shy.

WORKED ALL GEORGIA AWARD

The Atlanta Radio Club, with the support of the Georgia Section of the ARRL, is proud to support the "Worked All Georgia" Award. The WAG Award is open to radio amateurs who can provide proof of two-way radio amateur radio contact with all 159 counties in the state of Georgia. This award is nice complement to the annual Georgia QSO Party, which in fact would be a good time to work on some of those hard-to-get counties. The award is embodied in a nice certificate.
More information can be found here.

CLUB HISTORY

The Atlanta Radio Club (ARC) was founded in March 1911. It is believed to be the longest continually operating club in Georgia (Georgia Tech was founded earlier). With over 100 members, ARC activities include meetings, operating events, training sessions, membership outings, and community service activities in Metro-Atlanta.

The ARC helps operate the Atlanta Hamfestival and owns, operates or supports 11 repeaters around the metro area.  In an average month, the club will hold a regular membership meeting, a tech/training session or operating outing, publish the Atlanta Ham newsletter, have 8 lunch outings and host over 20 nets via club repeaters.

SISTER Club - Geelong Amateur Radio Club - VK3ATL

Did you know the Atlanta Radio Club has a sister club?

In 2010, Dallas Jones (VK3DJ) from Drysdale, Victoria in Australia visited the United States to meet some friends he met on the air. "During his travels, he visited the Atlanta Radio Club and from all accounts had a great time with the guys."
