Do you live in a subdivision or condominium where your HOA doesn't allow antennas to be erected? Do you live with someone who doesn't appreciate the aesthetic value of antennas like we do? Do you operate in parks or other places outdoors where antennas are discouraged?
If so, our April program will be just what you're looking for. Andy Keels, PE, KD4ABB will be talking about Stealth Antennas, antennas designed to work well but be unnoticed. The PE after Andy's name indicates that he's a registered professional engineer so we can be assured he knows what he's talking about. Satellite TV antenna bans were preempted in 1996 but there are no such protections for amateur radio antennas. The ARRL has been trying for 10+ years to get federal legislation passed, but they have been unsuccessful. It's a 2 day event held the 2nd weekend in April. Individuals and teams outside of Georgia try to make as many contacts inside Georgia as they can and Georgia individuals and teams try to make as many contacts, both inside and outside of Georgia, as they can.
Points are awarded for contacts and prizes are given in about 40 different categories. The Atlanta Radio Club sponsors the plaque that's given to the Georgia Club with more points than any other Georgia Club. The North Fulton Amateur Radio League (NFARL) has won this plaque almost every year. The ARC suggests participating in the GQP (Georgia QSO Party) in one or more of three different ways.
ARC Sunday Event The ARC will have an operating event on Sunday, April 10 in a park where people can get on the radio---either a radio they bring or one that the club provides---and make contacts or just watch and talk to others at the event. Our March meeting featured Tom Crowley, KT4XN, who delivered a fascinating presentation on Amateur Radio Astronomy.
Our universe radiates electromagnetic waves all over the spectrum from DC to x-rays. When we look at the sky, we see only the visible light portion of the spectrum. And much of that visible light is attenuated by the atmosphere. But when we listen to the incoming radio waves, we get a much bigger and more detailed "picture" of the universe. The science of receiving and interpreting the radio waves is called Radio Astronomy. It can be done by professionals and by amateurs. Tom first outlined the spectrum of the incoming waves , then he discussed the methods we use to receive them. During that discussion, he showed us pictures of some of the larger radio telescopes and then went on to explain what we learn from listening. Finally, he discussed ways that we can listen to the universe on our own. The presentation was quite enlightening. The WAG Award is open to radio amateurs who can provide proof of two-way radio amateur radio contact with all 159 counties in the state of Georgia. This award is nice complement to the annual Georgia QSO Party, which in fact would be a good time to work on some of those hard-to-get counties. The award is embodied in a nice certificate.

More details CLUB HISTORYThe Atlanta Radio Club (ARC) was founded in March 1911. It is believed to be the longest continually operating club in Georgia (Georgia Tech was founded earlier). With over 100 members, ARC activities include meetings, operating events, training sessions, membership outings, and community service activities in Metro-Atlanta.
The ARC helps operate the Atlanta Hamfestival and owns, operates or supports 11 repeaters around the metro area. In an average month, the club will hold a regular membership meeting, a tech/training session or operating outing, publish the Atlanta Ham newsletter, have 8 lunch outings and host over 20 nets via club repeaters.
