The ARC will be operating a special event station from WSB Radio in celebration of WSB's 100th anniversary. WSB first went on the air in 2022, 11 years after the Atlanta Radio Club was formed.
The event will take place at WSB's studios in Midtown Atlanta and at their transmitter site across from Northlake Mall. We are encourage everyone to operate from their homes that whole week, using the special event callsign, W5B. Details can be found on our WSB event page. Update: The event was a success. We had 2 radios set up and we made many DX contacts with hams in Italy, France, and Africa. We almost made contact with a ham in Syria.
Event: This is one of the major international voice contests, and stations all over the world will be looking for U.S. stations. And we’ll also be calling “CQ DX” to generate some international calls on our own. As usual, we’ll provide radios and antennas, or feel free to bring your own. Our March meeting featured Tom Crowley, KT4XN, who delivered a fascinating presentation on Amateur Radio Astronomy.
Our universe radiates electromagnetic waves all over the spectrum from DC to x-rays. When we look at the sky, we see only the visible light portion of the spectrum. And much of that visible light is attenuated by the atmosphere. But when we listen to the incoming radio waves, we get a much bigger and more detailed "picture" of the universe. The science of receiving and interpreting the radio waves is called Radio Astronomy. It can be done by professionals and by amateurs. Tom first outlined the spectrum of the incoming waves , then he discussed the methods we use to receive them. During that discussion, he showed us pictures of some of the larger radio telescopes and then went on to explain what we learn from listening. Finally, he discussed ways that we can listen to the universe on our own. The presentation was quite enlightening. The WAG Award is open to radio amateurs who can provide proof of two-way radio amateur radio contact with all 159 counties in the state of Georgia. This award is nice complement to the annual Georgia QSO Party, which in fact would be a good time to work on some of those hard-to-get counties. The award is embodied in a nice certificate.

More details CLUB HISTORYThe Atlanta Radio Club (ARC) was founded in March 1911. It is believed to be the longest continually operating club in Georgia (Georgia Tech was founded earlier). With over 100 members, ARC activities include meetings, operating events, training sessions, membership outings, and community service activities in Metro-Atlanta.
The ARC helps operate the Atlanta Hamfestival and owns, operates or supports 11 repeaters around the metro area. In an average month, the club will hold a regular membership meeting, a tech/training session or operating outing, publish the Atlanta Ham newsletter, have 8 lunch outings and host over 20 nets via club repeaters.
