January 7th Meeting

Our first meeting of 2021. COVID-19 is still plaguing the world so we'll be meeting via Zoom again.

Our January speaker will be Jim Reed, N4BFR, the ARC's 2020 Ham of the Year.
Jim has been looking around and putting together some suggestions for new hams in their first 6 months.  Come and pick up some tips or give some suggestions during his January meeting presentation: "So you're a licensed ham. Now what?"
When you study to become a ham, you learn about the FCC rules as well as a little about antennas and other ham radio tech. But do you know how to get on the air? What to say? What to expect?  What options you have for getting on the air? Jim will answer these questions and any others you might have.
Are you an experienced ham? Please feel free to contribute to the talk by sharing some of your newbie experiences at the end of Jim's presentation.

Please join us on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 7:00 PM ET via Zoom. To join the meeting, click here.

Also, don't forget our groups.io calendar here.

At our last meeting in December

We had a show and tell where our members showed off their shacks and current projects.

We also had a PowerPoint presentation of all of the photos of shacks, antennas, radios and other ham related gear that our members had submitted in advance. The presentation lasted almost 10 minutes. We had a lot of pictures to show.
And the whole thing was set to Christmas music. Thanks, everyone, for sending in your pictures.

One of our members who can't make it to our physical meetings, Dallas Jones, VK3D, was on the zoom...from Australia. He helped arrange for the ARC and the Geelong (Australia) Amateur Radio Club to become sister clubs. Our meeting started at 7 PM, our time, as you know, but it was 11 AM Friday where Dallas was. To him, our meetings are on the first Friday of every month.

The biggest event of the meeting was the awarding of the 2020 ARC Ham of the Year Award.

This year's recipient is Jim Reed, N4BFR. Jim is a former ARC president and he chaired the Election Committee that conducted our August election. It went smoothly and was uncontested. Jim also promoted the club on social media, explored ways of teaching hams over the internet, and helped out wherever the club needed help. He is one of our Sunday night net ops and he often steps up and runs the net when the scheduled net op can't. Jim is also an ARRL Volunteer Examiner (VE); he helped administer testing sessions where prospective hams became new hams and licensed hams upgraded their licenses.
Congratulations, Jim.

Due to restrictions placed on public gatherings, our meetings are still online.

Club History

The Atlanta Radio Club (ARC) was founded in March 1911. It is believed to be the longest continually operating club in Georgia (Georgia Tech was founded earlier). With over 100 members, ARC activities include meetings, operating events, training sessions, membership outings, and community service activities in Metro-Atlanta.

The ARC helps operate the Atlanta Hamfestival and owns, operates or supports 11 repeaters around the metro area.  In an average month, the club will hold a regular membership meeting, a tech/training session or operating outing, publish the Atlanta Ham newsletter, have 8 lunch outings and host over 20 nets via club repeaters.

Sister Club - Geelong Amateur Radio Club - VK3ATL

Did you know the Atlanta Radio Club has a sister club?

In 2010, Dallas Jones (VK3DJ) from Drysdale, Victoria in Australia visited the United States to meet some friends he met on the air. "During his travels, he visited the Atlanta Radio Club and from all accounts had a great time with the guys."
