ARC February Meeting is JS8Call

Jordan KN4CRD will be giving us a look at HF Digital with his presentation about JS8Call. What is JS8Call?

From – “I’m currently building the JS8Call application, a derivative of WSJT-X that focuses on long-form keyboard-to-keyboard style communication similar to what you’d see in Fldigi or FSQ.”

In this era of low-to-no sunspots, we need all the help we can get, and this new mode will definitely help!

We will meet at the Atlanta Red Cross HQ on Monroe DR, and the meeting begins promptly at 7:00 pm on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2018.

Our usual meet to eat place, Cowtippers is closed! Alternates include Grindhouse Killer Burgers, 1842 Piedmont RD, and Ginos NY Pizza Bar, 1740 Cheshire Bridge RD, NE.

ARC January 2019 Meeting is AFCEMA and More

Our next meeting is Thursday, January 3, 2019 at the Atlanta Metro Red Cross HQ from 7:00pm until 9:00pm.

Jeffrey “Drew” Keber will be given us a short presentation to discuss the AFCEMA at the beginning of the meeting. AFCEMA is the Atlanta Fulton County Emergency Management Agency. This presentation will be followed by a discussion about how we can all be more involved in our club’s mission. See you there!

September 2018 Meeting is DMR 101

Ken Bryant K1DMR will be our next guest speaker and his topic is “Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) – Why this Digital Protocol should be Important to You”

Ken has been a licensed amateur radio operator for nearly 25 years and holds a general class license.  For the past 20 years, Ken has held various leadership positions in the Amateur Radio Public Service Corps and Emergency Services.  He has been involved in Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) since the beginning in 2006 when it was first released to the commercial market in the US.  He is a frequent presenter on DMR around the country.

Mark the date of September 6 on your calendar now. The meeting begins promptly at 7:30 pm and ends at 9:00 pm. The address is 1955 Monroe Dr. NE, Atlanta for the Atlanta Metropolitan Red Cross Center, and we meet in the Board Room. See you there!

August 2018 Meeting is SWL and Elections

Thursday August 2nd, 2018 is the date for the next meeting. Join our current president Jim N4BFR on a tour of Short Wave Listening.  After Jim’s presentation we will hold the ARC annual election for our Executive Committee. As of this writing there is one slate up for election, and that slate includes the following Amateur Radio Operators:

June 2018 Meeting is Trunking

This Thursday June 7, 2018 we will have Christopher Atkinson with his program “MARTA Communication Technologies” – A practical view of the systems that allow MARTA to communicate both above ground and below.  I will be covering technologies such as trunking, simulcast, tx/rx losses, bi-directional amplifiers, and GPS timing.

Christopher describes himself:

Lifelong super nerd.  Worked in RF for nearly 30 years covering everything from designing trunking systems to being the service manager of a 2-way radio shop.  Contracted for the US Department of Defense doing research & design for security related equipment.  Degrees in computer networking, electronics engineering and certifications in various specialties.  Can set the time on both the VCR AND the Microwave oven.

I can relate to the lifelong super nerd part!

June 2018 Meeting is APRS

I am pleased to announce that Jorge Luis – JL – NN4QQ will be our speaker at the regular June meeting on 6/7/2018. His topic is on APRS, specifically on a feature called ‘Voice Alert’

“My presentation is a response to the anemically low level of activity on local repeaters. Focus on an APRS feature called voice alert. This one feature could have a significant impact on the levels of repeater activity, Bringing in it back to healthier levels.”

The INTERNATIONAL SATERN SSB NET is on 14.265.0 MHz on Monday through Saturday at 11:00 AM (ET) / 10:00 AM (CT), 0900 (MT), 0800 (PT).

The INTERNATIONAL SATERN DIGI-NET is on 14.065.0 MHz on Saturdays at 1:00 PM (Eastern) / 12:00 PM (Central).  Default mode is OLIVIA 8/500 (8 Tones, 500 Wide) offset by the standard 1000 Hz.

The CENTRAL TERRITORY SATERN NET is currently not in operation.

The EASTERN TERRITORY SATERN NET is on 3.918 MHz on Thursdays at 9:30 AM (Eastern)

The SOUTHERN TERRITORY SATERN NET is on 7.262.0 MHz on Saturdays at 11:00 AM (Eastern) / 10:00 AM (Central).

The WESTERN TERRITORY SATERN NET is on 3.977.7 MHz on Sundays at 0400 Z / 9:00 PM (Mountain) / (9:00 PM (Pacific).  The pre-net begins two hours earlier and stations can use NetLogger on the internet to check-in and monitor the net.

April 2018 Meeting is Heavy Metal

Thursday April 5 is the day for our next meeting. The topic is TTY – Heavy Metal in the Internet Age. Our guest presenter is Nick N0NCQ and he will share a look at some of his big iron and show us how  hams and other enthusiasts salvage TTY equipment and make it relevant in the internet age.
