December Tech Session – Coax and Connectors

From Bill Perkins, KB4KFT:

November’s Second Sunday Tech also had a discussion about what to do in December and a Coax and Connector was requested. Since no one there objected – we’ll do it.

Be sure to check the bottom of this message for preview of 2017!

Sunday, December 11th, Tech Session Meeting – Coax and Connectors

The December 2016 monthly meeting of the “Second Sunday Tech Session” will be Sunday, December 11th at 2:00p in the main conference room at the main administration building of Dekalb Peachtree Airport (PDK) in Chamblee. The building is at the end of the main entrance to the airport – just follow the road off Clairemont down to the cul-de-sac parking lot at its end. The conference room is in the building marked “Epps”. Come in the main entrance take the stairs at the left, the room is on the left at the top of the stairs – room 227. Talk-in (unofficial) is on the 146.820 machine (minus with 146.2 PL) Most times simplex 146.520 is also monitored.

The address to PDK is:

Angel Flight Room (224)
Dekalb Peachtree Airport (PDK)
2000 Airport Rd
Atlanta, GA 30341

We will be learning how to build PL-259 connectors and doing them (this is “hands on” sessions after all), building SO-239s, learning and building Anderson Power Poles, ringer and spade terminals, and fixing whatever needs to be fixed.

Also, of course, when dealing with these things you also need to learn techniques for soldering, crimping, stripping insulation, and so on. And my favorite, blow-torch use.

This is a general “bring what you are working on” sort of session where we will deal with about anything that comes in the door.

So if you have coax and need connectors on it, bring it on, power poles, same. Any sort of wire you need attached to something, bring it too. And if you have learned something interesting and want to teach others, come on down and join us. This is not a repair service but a chance to learn some basic skills of repair you can use yourself or pick up some tricks someone else has learned. And of course, have a good time. Some snacks and soft drinks will be provided, feel free to bring your own to share too.

See you there and then.

Coming up in 2017

As a heads up: January 2017 will be the also famous Soldering 101

January – The also famous Soldering 101 by Michael, KD4SGN. Getting ready for long winter kit building it is important to know not only how to solder but how to maintain the tools and supplies. Michael covers everything from getting started to advanced stuff. More on this session as we get closer.

Folks are encouraged to bring soldering iron and there will be stuff to practice on.

January program is now TBD.

February – May be an outing in the park… again out of discussion at the November session. We’ll need to get closer to the date to see what weather is like, But portable operation for VHF/UHF/DMR/DSTAR seems to fit as we enter Tornado Preparedness time in early February. More as we get closer. Make your base into a portable, make you HT into a base.

March – Portable operation… getting “rovers” ready for the Georgia QSO Party. This may include building quick up/quick down antennas, power connectors, choke building, etc. We will decide what this is based on what subjects come up over the next two months.

April – We may make this one a Saturday and/or Sunday GQP park outing.

May – Always is an outing in the park. Always good weather too, except once and then we were all under cover so it was more than OK.

June – Preparation for Field Day – hands on portable ideas plus whatever – this too will develop as we get closer.

Half a year half planned.
